Description
Almost forty years ago, I became aware of the important historical role of the Universal Camera Corporation in camera design, manufacturing and sales in the United States. I began to collect the Univex line of cameras that were produced by Universal beginning in 1932 and extending for twenty years. The collection focused on the still film cameras and accessories Universal produced in this period. I have moved into smaller quarters and no longer have the space to display my collection but would prefer to see it kept intact. Accordingly, this listing is for a collection of 41 Universal Camera Corporation products. It includes at least one example of most of the still cameras marketed by Universal. It does not include any of the movie cameras that they produced in the same period.
These cameras are for display. Most are in good cosmetic condition (see photos) and several of the later versions have functioning shutters, focusing and aperture controls but have not been tested with film. One of the Mercury CX models (s/n 138200) has been used successfully for photography in 2021.
Several of the cameras have leather cases and/or original boxes. Also included are a copy of Repinski's comprehensive history of Universal and its products as well as a Univex M29 Flash unit and a Jen Flash unit for use with Univex products.
These cameras fall into groups based on the film they required. The earliest used Universal proprietary films that are no longer available. Later items used standard 120, 35 and 16mm film. Cameras in this collection using each type are as follows:
