Ok. Let’s clear the air. If you are the buyer of this instrument, you're buying a
piece of history
, not a just horn to use everyday in a band, although it very well could be. Look up the history of Boston Musical Instrument Company and the turning point of the company in 1909.
As for the condition; well, if I reach 111 years of age in 39 years, and I am in the condition of this horn, I’ll be ecstatic. Does it have a few bumps and bruises (dents); yes. Is it showing its age (tarnished); yes. Are the braces between the neck and the bell throat loose (week kneed); yes (does it kind of sound like some of us?). But . . . the compression is good, and the valves are smooth to the touch and playability.
This horn was my grandfather’s. I learned to play with it starting in the sixth grade and used it until my father surprised me with a new trumpet in 1964.
It has been a table ornament ever since. That being said, though I am willing to part with it, there's no urgency to do so. So, if you are interested, don't "watch it" buy it, because the price isn't coming down.
