It is designed to be placed in a frame (it is NOT the frame and does not stand alone.)   It also serves as added protection separating the art or photo from the glass.  This size mat is a standard size which will fit into frames purchased from Walmart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Target etc.  Hope this answers your question.
